化粪池在欧洲已有100多年的使用历史。最初用于积累肥料。在城市化发展进程中，化粪池对治理环境污染、保护水体起到了积极作用。

如今，由于大城市污水处理管网及配套建设日趋完备，化粪池为农业生产提供肥料的作用已基本消失，但在广大农村，化粪池对改善居住环境仍十分重要。

1.临时性储存污泥，有机污泥进行厌氧腐化，熟化的有机污泥可作为农用肥料。
